Das offene DFN-Repository hostet vorwiegend OPSI-Pakete für Software, die im wissenschaftlichen Bereich zum Einsatz kommt, z.B. Atlas.TI, Citavi, MaxQDA, Mendeley-Desktop, R, PublishOrPerish, Gnu-PSPP, Zotero u.a. Die Kommunikation, Koordination und Erfahrungsaustausch erfolgen über die DFN-Mailingliste OPSI4instituts (o4i) und das WIKI.
Als zusätzlicher Service DFN-Notify wird über eine offene DFN-Mailingliste OPSI4instituts-Notify automatisiert über Updates von allgemeinen SW-Produkten (z.Z. ca. 125 SW-Produkte Stand 2016-08) und mehrerer Repositorys (DFN, UIB,disconnectedperpeer) informiert.
